Research Assistant position in Intertidal Ecology

Position Description

The project aims at furthering our understanding of the consequences of the physical constraints experienced by the intertidal organisms living on hard substrates that are either natural (e.g. rocky reefs, boulder fields) or artificial (e.g. jetties, wave-breakers). Specifically, the project investigates the role of substrate temperature on their colonization by sessile fauna and flora and the subsequent abundance and biodiversity patterns.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for the field deployment of (i) artificial settlement plates that will be passively heated by solar radiation, and (ii) temperature sensors on sites spreading from Boulogne-sur-Mer to Dunkirk. The RA will subsequently be responsible for the assessment of the colonization rate of the plates as well as the temporal assessment of their biomass and biodiversity patterns.

This Project is co-funded by the State “Hauts-de-France” and the French Ministry for Higher Education and Research (CPER “Climibio”).

Candidate Profile

The applicant will have a Master in Marine Ecology, Intertidal Ecology, Biological Oceanography, or in a related field; a demonstrated ability in the following areas:

  • use of temperature loggers such as iButtons and/or TidBits
  • taxonomy of intertidal invertebrates
  • field work
  • knowledge of safety rules in the lab and on the field
  • communicate and work with multiple students and scientists
  • travel to field sites spread along the coast of the “Hauts-de-France” state (i.e. from Dunkirk down to Boulogne sur Mer), hence driver’s licence needed
